Getting Around the Dominican Republic
Most major roads in the Dominican
Republic are in good condition.
Once off the major routes,
things can get difficult. Renting
a car, although expensive, is a
good way to see the island.
ò Rental cars are available
but very expensive
ò Consider a 4-wheel drive
vehicle if you plan out-of-
the-way destinations
ò Driving is on the RIGHT
ò Gas stations are scarce, close
early in the countryside and
require cash
ò Tolls may be paid on roads out
of the cities. Police often stop
rental cars driven by tourists
ò Taxis are available and
government regulated but
un-metered. Fares are
generally posted to principle
destinations, but others must
be negotiated
ò Charter and tour buses are
available and are considered
good values
